The Big Six quarterfinals continued Wednesday night, with two series kicking off. The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings, who finished first in the regular season, played host to Kipling/Windthorst in one game, while the Wawota Flyers paid a visit to the defending champion Redvers Rockets to kick off the other best-of-five series.

The Wheat Kings, who hadn't lost on home ice to a Big Six opponent all season, came out firing on all cylinders, and harvested a bumper crop of goals, routing Kipling/Windthorst 9-1.

The home team got on the board at the 6:24 mark of the first period when Brandt Hudson scored on netmunder Trystyn McKay. The goal was assisted by Thomas Carleton and Devon Johnson.

Before the end of the first period, Reid Peterson made it a 2-0 game with his first of the postseason. Johnson picked up an assist on the goal, which came with 2:25 left on the clock. Drew Fellner had the other assist.

In the second period, the Wheat Kings put the game out of reach with four goals. The first two of the period coming just 29 seconds apart.

Devin Cobbold scored his first of two in the game, with Braden Mellon and Lyndon Lumb assisting. Then, with 11:53 on the clock in the middle frame, Dylan Frey scored with Hudson and Cole Rooney assisting.

Cobbold’s second goal of the game came with 5:26 remaining in the period. He was assisted on the goal by Shelby Gray and Mellon. Just 80 seconds later, Rooney scored a goal of his own, and it was 6-0 Yellow Grass.

In the third period, Mellon scored for the Wheat Kings to make it 7-0, with Gray and Cobbold picking up the assists. His marker coming at the 5:14 mark of the period.

It was followed up by a goal by Gray with 6:54 remaining.

The Oil Kings then scored a goal of their own, as Josh Hassler scored with 6:15 remaining in the period. Caley Bjork assisted on the goal, which ended the shutout bid of Tanner Wilderman.

Yellow Grass would add one more goal late in the perio, with Johnson finding the back of the net, assisted by Dustin Chartrand and Lumb.

Game two ion the series will be in Kipling Friday night.

In Redvers, the Rockets were hoping to launch their bid for a repeat championship with the Wawota Flyers in town. While they were down early in the game, things took off in the second and third period as the home team picked up a 6-1 victory.

The Flyers, who captured the Big Six title in 2017, started the game off with a goal from Brady Dinwoodie. Jesse Matthewson was credited with the assist on the tally, which came at the 13:14 mark of the first period.

From there, tit would be all Redvers for the rest of the night.

It began when Brady Fidierchuk scored an unassisted goal with 5:49 left in the second period to tie the game up. Just under two minutes later, the Rockets took the lead as Remi Lamotte found the back of the net, assisted by Drew Hoff.

Hoff would score a goal of his own to start things off in the third period. He beat Brandan Stoudt at the 6:11 mark of the final frame, with Lamotte and Gavin Martel assisting the goal. Moments later, Martel scored himself, assisted by Kevin Mann and Sean Jonassen.

The lead was extended to 5-1 when Hoff scored his second of the evening. Jordon Miller and Lamotte assisted on the goal. The Rockets then rounded out the scoring with just seconds left in the game, as Todd Gervais scored. He was assisted on the goal by Craig Gaudet and Kelsey Kenler.

The Rockets will now travel to Wawota for game two of the series Friday night.
