It was a busy night Saturday in the Big Six Hockey League, with three games on the go. The action would hopefully settle of the logjams which were starting to form in the standings.

The night would start off in Bienfait, where the Coalers were playing host to the Redver Rockets. While Bienfait had a game in hand, a win for the Rockets would bump them ahead to second in the standings. It would be Bienfait who came out on top, winning 3-1.

The Rockets jumped out into the lead in the first period when Drew Hoff scored on Jackson Walliser at the 5:10 mark. The goal was assisted by Jordon Miller and Brady Fidierchuk.

The score would hold steady, with the visitors carrying the lead into the third period. Then, it would be the Coalers who jumped in front.

With just over 14 minutes remaining, Dylan Herzberg would find the back of the net, making it a 1-1 game. Preston Erickson picked up the assist. Just under three minutes later, Herzberg would score his second of the game, with Keegan Malaryk and Jason Hengen assisting on the goal.

With the lead, the Coalers would add to it just past the halfway mark of the third. Cole Piche would score on Thomas Bauche, making it a 3-1 game. The goal would be assisted by Hunter Piche and Erickson.

In Carnduff, the Red Devils hosted the Oxbow Huskies. Carnduff was hoping to move into first in the standings with the win, tying the Carlyle Cougars who were idle. For the Huskies, they were hoping to break a three-game losing skid, their last win coming on November 30th. The losing skid was extended for the Huskies, with Carnduff picking up a 3-0 shutout.

The scoring would start for the Red Devils before the game was 30 seconds old. At the 28 second mark, Trevor Geiger would score on Ethan Veroba, making it 1-0. Blake McMillen and Devon Carriere assisted on the goal.

It would then become 2-0 Carnduff when Sheldon Thompson would score four minutes later. McMillen drew an assist on the goal, as did Jason Boyes.

In the second period, the Red Devils put the game out of reach for the visitors. Tanner Reynolds scored with 3:36 remaining in the period. Cody Moore and Brandon Trask assisted on the tally.

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings solidified their share of the lead in the standings as they played host to the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings. The battle of the Big Six royalty would be a rout for the Wheat Kings, as they walloped the Oil Kings 9-0.

The route started just 1:12 into the game, as Thomas Carleton scored the opening goal of the game. The unassisted tally was followed by a goal from Devin Cobbold with 9:11 left on the clock in the period. Kyndon Lumb had the assist on the goal.

The Wheat Kings made it 3-0 by the end of the first when Brad Riege scored, with Justin Richter and Lumb assisting on the goal.

In the second period, the Wheat Kings added to the lead when Braden Mellon scored at the 4:32 mark. The former Weyburn Red Wing captain’s goal was assisted by Jesse Watson and MIke Onstad.

To finish off the period, Yellow Grass would score three goals in a little over three minutes.

The flurry started with Reid Paterson putting the puck past Austin Toth with 6:44 left in the middle period. Dylan Frey had the assist on the goal.

From there, Cole Rooney would add to the lead, with Mellon picking up an assist 1:11 after the Paterson goal. It would become a 7-0 lead when Kashton Janzen scored two minutes later. His tally was assisted by Carleton and Riege.

Carleton would score his second of the game in the latter stages of the third period. The goal was assisted by Cobbold and Riege. The scoring was rounded out when Brendon Vertefeuille scored with 2:57 remaining on the clock. His goal was assisted by Richter.

There are a number of games this week in the Big Six, starting with a matchup in Midale as the Arcola/Kisbey Combines come to town. Tuesday, Bienfait entertains Carlyle, and Wawota is in Arcola. The last game ahead of the weekend will be Wednesday when Redvers play host to Carnduff.
