The stage is set and we're down to the final two teams to decide a champion for the Big Six Hockey League in 2016/17.

This year's championship will have a different look from the past several years, largely due to the fact that the Bienfait Coalers will not be in the final for the first time in seven seasons.

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings, in their inaugural season in the Big Six, eliminated Bienfait in the semi-final with a thrilling 4-3 triple-overtime victory in Game 5.

However, there is some consistency in the league final as the defending champion Wawota Flyers will defend their title in making their third straight appearance in the final.

There is not a lot of history between this year's finalists with the two teams only playing twice against each other during the season.

Wawota Flyers (3rd overall - 26 points) vs. Yellow Grass Wheat Kings (5th overall - 24 points)

Season Series:

The two teams split their two games during the season. Wawota won 6-2 at home on December 3rd. Yellow Grass won 11-2 at home on Sunday, January 22nd.

How They Got Here:

Wawota swept the Midale Mustangs in three straight games in the quarterfinal before eliminating the Redvers Rockets in four games (W 4-3, L 3-2, W 4-3 2OT, W 4-2) in the semi-final.

Yellow Grass swept the Carnduff Red Devils in three straight games in the quarterfinal before eliminating the Bienfait Coalers, needing all five games to move on (W 8-6, L 4-1, W 5-2, L 7-4, W 4-3 3OT) to the final.

The Skinny:

The Wawota Flyers have the chance to repeat as Big Six champions after winning the title in 5 games last year over Bienfait. After disposing of Midale in the quarterfinal, Wawota would be able to edge Redvers in four close games during the semi-final. The Flyers were successful despite being hit hard with the injury bug during provincial play. Wawota was without leading scorer Justin Lamontagne, Brent Struble and Kent Sauter for the final two games against Redvers and the status for all three players is unknown to start the final against Yellow Grass. The Flyers have relied on their deep offensive depth and stellar goaltender from Guillaume Blouin to return to the final.

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings have defied the odds and had a dream season in their first year in the Big Six Hockey League. The Wheat Kings finished the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the league and carried that momentum into a first-round sweep of Carnduff. Then Yellow Grass did what no other team in the Big Six could do since 2009 (except for Wawota in last year's championship), knock the Bienfait Coalers out of the playoffs. It didn't come easy as all five games were won by the home team, with the Wheat Kings needing triple-overtime to finally knock out the Coalers. After a slow start to the season offensively, the Wheat Kings have had one of the more potent attacks in the Big Six and have scored 40 goals in 8 playoff games (1st - 5 G/game).

The Wawota Flyers finished higher in the standings during the regular season and will have home-ice advantage in the Best-of-7 series.
