Despite a 7-3 loss to the Regina Red Sox in the final game of the WMBL regular season Sunday afternoon, the Weyburn Beavers are still the top team in the East Division. The team set a new franchise high with 37 wins in the regular season, and just 11 losses.

The game Sunday afternoon saw the Beavers use a number of different players, all getting some reps in ahead of the playoffs, which start Tuesday afternoon. Brodie Stairs, who normally comes into the game from the bullpen, got the start, pitching the first inning. Third baseman Cam Williams went the next four innings of the game. Christian Rivera, Chandler Casey and Eric Evans all pitched an inning as well.

The Red Sox allowed their arms to get some work as well. Regina used six different pitchers in the game.

The Beavers were first on the board when Wade Weinberger hit a home run in the first inning. The two-run blast was Weinberger’s eighth of the campaign. It was also the 43rd by a Weyburn Beaver, solidifying the team record for home runs in a season.

The Red Sox bounced back, taking the lead, and proceeded to hold off the Beavers for the 7-3 victory.

The Beavers will now get a day of rest before they entertain the Moose Jaw Miller Express for the first round of the playoffs. The best-of-five series will kick off at Tom Laing Park Tuesday night. Game two will be in Weyburn on Wednesday. Games three and four will be played in Moose Jaw Thursday and Friday, and game five, if necessary, will be back in Weyburn on Saturday.
