In his first start of the season, Ryan Johnson quickly regained his old form. The fifth-year Weyburn Beaver pitched 5 ⅓ innings of no-hit baseball while striking out six on his way to helping the Beavers to a 5-1 win over the Yorkton Cardinals. The win is the second in a row over the Cardinals at home, and third in a row for the Beavers.

The two teams played a defensive and pitching game, until the fourth inning, when the Beavers would bat through the rotation. The Beavers loaded the bases, and then Wade Weinburger drew a walk, cashing in Brady Nygaard. The next batter, Zach Frazier, would add two more runs with a single to center field. Another walk with bases loaded, this time to Luis Jimenez, brought home Weinburger. A wild pitch to Ulysses Fluellen would bring home the final run of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Johnson’s bid for the no-hitter was shattered with a single to center field by Walker McCleney. He would be brought home on a single by Hank Forrest, giving Yorkton their final run of the day.

The Cardinals did have a chance to tie things up in the top of the ninth. With Eric Evans on the mound for Weyburn, the bases were loaded with one out for Yorkton. It would turn out for not, as Jake Davidson would hit the ball right to the shortstop Jimenez, and the 6-4-3 double play closed out the game.

The Beavers will now have a short rest before they host the Swift Current 57’s. The game is Sunday afternoon at Tom Laing Park. It is also Bark in the Park day, where fans will be able to bring along their dogs. First pitch is at 2:05 p.m.
