The Weyburn Beavers made the most of the opportunities they have Thursday night, as they beat the Regina Red Sox 6-4 in 10 innings. The win gives Weyburn a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five WMBL East Division semifinal.

The Red Sox started out the same as they did Wednesday, taking an early lead. After the first inning, it was 2-0 Regina, but then the pitching and defense for the Beavers tightened up.

Starting Weyburn pitcher Carson Perkins went seven innings, allowing four runs in total while striking out five. This gave the offense a chance to close the gap, which they did in the fourth and fifth innings.

Carlos Flores, Luis Jimenez, and Evan Weidner all brought in runs over the two innings, making it a 3-2 lead for Weyburn. In the bottom of the fifth, though, Regina tied it up.

In the sixth inning, the two teams exchanged runs, with Zach Frazier bringing in his third run of the playoffs with a single to right field.

From there, the Beavers pitching and defense placed the Red Sox on lockdown. Cody Pamperin and Eric Evans combined for the final three innings and didn’t allow a hit, while each striking out one. Pamperin was credited with the win, and Evans the save.

In the top of the tenth, Flores hit a single to right field. Anthony Wiggins advanced to third, and then, thanks to an error by the right fielder, was able to score on the play. Two batters later, Frazier hit a single to right, but then an error by the catcher on the throw to home allowed Flores to cross home plate, giving Weyburn the 6-4 lead.

Game four in the series is Friday night, at Currie Field in Regina. Game five in the series, if necessary, will be played at Tom Laing Park Saturday night.
