Three runs in the first inning, then a two-run double from Tyler Scott in the eighth powered the Weyburn Beavers to a 5-2 win over the Regina Red Sox Monday night. The win gives the Beavers an early 1-0 lead over Regina in their best-of-five WMBL East Division final.

Scott finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Keaton Greenwalt had a good game as well, going 2-for-4, with a run coming as a result of stealing home in the first inning, taking advantage of a throw to second to cover Wade Weinberger stealing second.

“It was a good first game, kind of want to get the train rolling early and go and get the first win and home, and go into tomorrow with a good mentality,” Scott said after the game.

On the mound, Beavers starting pitcher Ryan Johnson had another strong performance. He went 6 ⅓ innings, striking out seven, and allowing just two runs.

Dalton Ross and Chandler Casey pitched an inning of relief each for the Beavers. Eric Evans then came in and recorded the save, picking up two strikeouts in the top of the ninth.

Red Sox starting pitcher Evan Rogers went 7 ⅔ innings, giving five runs over twelve hits while striking out four.

The runs from the Beavers in the first came from a variety of sources, starting with Greenwalt’s steal. Felix Correa hit a single to right which brought home Weinberger. The next batter, Cory Ewald, then drove in Correa with a double to center.

The Red Sox were finally able to get on the baord in the fifth inning. A double from Adam De La Cruz brought in two runs.

The runs from Scott in the eighth came after Cory Ewald was walked, and Anothony Galindo reached base with a double to second. After a pitching change, with Tylerbernhardt coming on in place of Rogers, Scott hit the double which brought in the insurance runs.

Game two of the series will be Tuesday night at Tom Laing Park. The game starts at 7:00 p.m.
