A three-run home run from Weyburn’s Ryan Gaab would prove to be the difference maker, as the Weyburn Beavers held off the Melville Millionaires for a 5-3 victory Sunday afternoon. The win was the 14th consecutive for the Beavers, setting a new franchise record, and, from all sources, what appears to be a new league record. Information on the league record is hard to source, however, as the league record book is not publicly available.

“Whatever we’ve been doing recently has been killing it,” said Jack Barrie, who added two more RBI to his total on the season. “Fourteen in a row is no small feat.”

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead when Jack Barrie hit a two-run blast in the first inning. The home run was the third in his past three at-bats. Over the weekend, Barrie had four home runs in three games to go with eight RBI.

Gaab then went yard in the third inning, his second home run of the season. It was also the first inning the Weyburn native has ever hit at Tom Laing Park.

“I was just looking for a pitch to drive with two strikes,” Gaab said after the game. “He (Melville pitcher Steven Pierce) left it up and I got the barrel to it and it went over.”

The home run from Gaab would also end the day for Pierce, who lasted just three innings for the Millionaires, giving up five runs on just two hits. Pierce would also find himself with a high pitch count, throwing 77 pitches in his time on the mound.

The home runs would provide all the offence on the day for the Beavers, as their defence kept the opportunities for the Millionaires to score to a minimum.

“Pounding fastballs,” Vick answered when asked what worked for him during the game. “That’s the big thing with me, against a lot of these teams, pounding the fastball early then finishing light with the slider. That's the key to keeping them off balance to try to secure a win.”

Closer Jacob Standridge came out for the ninth inning, inducing two ground balls to second, and a line drive which was snagged by Gaab to finish the game. Standridge recorded his league-leading sixth save of the season.

With the win, the Beavers improved on the season to 14-2. They will have a tough pair of games ahead of them before they will get a much-deserved break as they play a home and home with the Swift Current 57’s. The two teams meet Monday night in Swift Current, before coming back to Weyburn on Tuesday.
