The wins keep coming for the Weyburn Beavers. They collected their tenth in a row to start the 2018 WMBL season Wednesday night, as they rallied to beat the Fort McMurray Giants 5-4 in 10 innings at Tom Laing Park.

The Beavers found themselves trailing heading into the bottom of the ninth when they tied the game up to force the extra inning. Wade Weinberger, playing his first game of the season, crushed a two-run bomb to right field, making it a 4-4 game.

In the 10th inning, the Beavers managed to get Keaton Greenwalt into scoring position, when Corey Harrell, who finished the game going 3-for-5, put a long double off the fence in centre field, allowing the game-winning run to cross the plate.

“I know Ty was on first base, and I saw it up, and I was just thinking, keep going ball, keep going ball, because wind was blowing in early (Wednesday) in BP, so I just hoped, and prayed it went out,” Weinberger said after the game when asked to describe the homer. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Harrell’s double was set up with a double by Greenwalt, then a sacrifice bunt by Cam Williams to move Greenwalt over to third. Harrell’s hit looked like it had the legs to go the full distance, but went off the wall. Nonetheless, it was enough for the walk-off win.

Shandon Herrera was credited with the win, pitching the final three innings. He struck out three batters and allowed just one hit. Daniel Crooks, who had the start, looked good on the mound, allowing just three runs in five innings of work while striking out six. The bullpen then helped keep the Giants close, with Brodie Stairs and Dalton Ross pitching an inning each before Herrera came on to close it out.

The Beavers were the first on the board in the game when Weinberger cashed in Omar Prieto with a single to centre field. With bases loaded, Weinberger then came in after Luke Lubinieki was walked on four straight pitches.

The Giants were able to reply with a run of their own in the third with a fielder’s choice while the bases were loaded. Taking advantage of an error in the fourth, Fort McMurray was able to get out in front with two more runs, before adding another in the seventh to make it 4-2.

The Beavers now have the day off, before they resume their homestand on Friday against the Yorkton Cardinals.
