It took just the third batter of the night for the Weyburn Beavers to take the lead against the Moose Jaw Miller Express Wednesday. A three-run home run from Wade Weinberger launched the Beavers into the lead, and they never looked back, beating the visitors 14-4. The win gives the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the WMBL East Division semifinal series.

Weinberger fouled the first pitch he saw, one he thought was perfect, off his foot, and stepped out of the batter's box, and walked back in determined.

“I was trying to tell myself not to miss another one because he’s coming back with something like that,” Weinberger said after the game. He took the pitch deep to right field, bringing in Corey Wheaton and Keaton Greenwalt with him.

Greenwalt was given the hard hat after the game, thanks to his performance at the plate, and in centre field. Greenwalt went 4-for-5, with a solo home run in the sixth inning, which put the Beavers up 10-3. Greenwalt added another RBI and had four runs in the game.

“We really stuck to them today,” Greenwalt said. “Coach Phil (Curtis) told us to lay off the off-speed in the dirt and to keep a good eye out for your pitch, and I think we did that really well tonight.”

Wheaton, who was named the league MVP earlier in the day, was 2-for-4 at the dish. He had an RBI, as well as a stolen base and two runs.

“We got hot at a good time, we’re scoring runs, and we’re just doing our jobs and I think that’s all we really need to do and if we keep doing that, then I think we’ll be in pretty good shape.”

On the mound, Daniel Crooks earned the win for the Beavers. He went six innings, allowing three runs while striking out six. Shandon Herrera, Chandler Casey and Christian Rivera pitched an inning each in relief. The lone blemish was an unearned run given up by Herrera in the seventh inning.

The runs came from across the roster for the Beavers. Corey Harrell, who was named the second-team all-star designated hitter, chipped in two RBI in the win, as did Felix Correa, who was named the second-team all-star shortstop. Cam Williams and Anthony Galindo had an RBI each as well.

The Beavers will now travel to Moose Jaw to take on the Miller Express at Tom Wells Park Thursday night in game three of the best-of-five series. A win for the Beavers will provide the sweep, and afford them a few days rest. If necessary, game five of the series would be played back in Weyburn on Saturday.
