The Weyburn Beavers, for the second game in a row, overcame a deficit late in the game to pick up an 8-7 win at home Sunday. This time, the opponent was the Yorkton Cardinals, who remain winless on the season. The Beavers, meanwhile, are the lone undefeated team in the WMBL, with a record of 7-0.

The key inning for the Beavers was the seventh when they found themselves down by three runs heading into the seventh inning stretch. They would reply, putting up four runs of their own, with timely hits and RBI from Keaton Greenwalt, Cam Williams and Anthony Galindo.

Galindo cashed in two runs with a single to left field off of Yorkton reliever Andrew Cisneros. He said the team, even when down, didn’t feel disheartened or that they were out of the game. It all came down to one mentality.

“Play all nine innings, because you never know what’s going to happen in those later innings.”

Greenwalt’s RBI in the seventh was his second of the game, giving him five for the season. He says this wasn’t the first time this year they have had to overcome a deficit of three or more runs for the win.

“In the beginning, I was a little nervous, but we have done it multiple times this season, so we were confident.”

Nolan Machibroda had his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. He drove the ball deep into right field, against a fairly strong wind, to help the team pull closer in the inning, as the Beavers were down 4-2 at that point.

In the early stages of the game, the Beavers had a tough time getting anything going against Yorkton’s starting pitcher, Tyson Black. He was perfect through the first three innings until Corey Wheaton was the first Weyburn player to get a hit on him. Wheaton smacked a double to right field and was brought home on a single by Greenwalt. Greenwalt himself would score when Galindo reached first base later in the inning thanks to an error by the right fielder.

The Beavers finished the rally to tie the game up in the sixth when Cory Ewald cashed in Williams with a double to left field.

Yorkton regained the lead in the top of the seventh when they scored three more runs off of starter Connor DiNaro, who was making his first start of the season for the Beavers. He finished the game going 6 ⅔ innings, with five strikeouts, while giving up six runs.

Dalton Ross then came onto pitch 1 ⅓ innings, keeping the Cardinals off the board, and earning the win on the stat sheet. Shandon Herrera pitched the ninth for the save, his second of the season.

The Beavers will now travel to Regina to face the Red Sox Monday night. Weyburn will be looking to make it three wins in a row against the rival Red Sox.

The next home game for the Beavers will be Tuesday, when they host Fort McMurray at Tom Laing Park.
