It is official. The Weyburn Beavers are playoff bound. They secured their berth in the postseason with a 3-2 walk-off win over the Okotoks Dawgs at Tom Laing Park Monday night.

The walk-off coming courtesy of Wade Weinberger, who put a towering two-run blast over the fence in left field for his sixth home run of the season.

“It’s gone. The second it went off, I said, it’s gone,” Weinberger said after the game when asked to describe the moment.

The game was a tight defensive battle between the two teams. While the teams were able to get runners on base, and into scoring position, it always came up short thanks to strong pitching, and timely defensive plays.

The Dawgs were the first to get on the board, after getting runners to second and third. Eddie Sanchez then hit a double to right field which brought in Collin Ridout and Cole Maclaren.

The Beavers replied in the fifth when Weinberger crossed the plate thanks to Gabe Melendez.

The game was set up for a dramatic finish when the Beavers came to bat in the ninth. Catcher Cory Ewald started things off with a double, his second of the game. Next up was Weinberger, who hit his blast which brought the crowd at Tom Laing to their feet.

Beavers starting pitcher Landon Mostellar went seven innings, striking out three and allowing the two runs on six hits. Shandon Herrera pitched the eighth innings, striking out one, and new arrival to the lineup, Chandler Casey, finished the game off. Casey was also credited with the win.

“It’s awesome,” said Cam Williams after the game, describing the feeling of having secured a playoff spot for the fifth season in a row. “I don’t know if everyone knows, or if it has sunk in yet, but it’s a great feeling. It’s been all four years that I’ve been here, and nothing beats playoff baseball so it’s really exciting.”

The Beavers are still looking to clinch first in the East Division. They have a magic number of 10 to secure the spot, with a four-game lead over the Regina Red Sox.

The Beavers will be back in action Tuesday night when they host the Dawgs for a second game. It starts at 7:00 p.m.
