The Weyburn Beavers had a bittersweet night Tuesday. They clinched a playoff spot for the fifth year in a row. The bitter part, they had some help from the Edmonton Prospects to secure the spot.

The Beavers fell 9-2 to the Lethbridge Bulls at Tom Laing Park Tuesday, as the Beavers had their three game winning streak snapped. With a magic number of one, the Beavers would clinch the spot with a Melville Millionaires loss. Thanks to the Prospects topping Melville 5-2, the Beavers got the spot. Now, it will come down to which seed they will have. The remaining ten game of the regular season will help determine that.

In Tuesday’s game, Garrett Waters had an uncharacteristic performance on the mound. The pitcher from the University of Mobile, in Alabama, suffered his first loss of the season, as he gave up five runs in seven innings. Only two of those runs were earned, though. He also struck out three.

The Beavers had jumped out to an early lead, thanks to RBI singles in the first inning from Brady Nygaard and Carlos Flores. It appeared the Beavers were going to hold onto the lead for a while, with back to back innings of three up, three down defensive play, before Ryan Pouwels hit his second home run of the year for the Bulls in the fourth, making it a 2-1 game.

Lethbridge would add two more runs in the fifth with a double by Brock Frentzel, and a sacrifice fly by Darius Carter. In the sixth, it became a 5-2 lead for the Bulls, as Dylan Borman stroked a two run blast. Lethbridge would add two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.

The Beavers won’t have long to bounce back, as they host the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Tom Laing Park Wednesday. Weyburn will be looking to break a slump against the Mavericks when the game gets underway. Medicine Hat has won every match-up between the two teams since July 12th, 2011, a stretch of 11 games. Unlike past years, though, the Mavericks aren’t the top team in the West Division of the WMBL this year and are currently sixth in the league’s overall standings, well back of Weyburn.

The game tonight begins at 7:05 p.m.
