The Weyburn Beavers took the lead in the first inning, and never looked back as they beat the Medicine Hat Mavericks 6-2 Wednesday night at Tom Lain Park. The win helps the Beavers keep pace with Regina and Swift Current for first place in the WMBL’s East Division, with the Beavers 3 ½ games back of the two top teams.

(photo courtesy Portrayedbypw)Carson Perkins, making his third start of the season, went seven innings, striking out four, and giving up both runs, neither earned, picked up his second win of the season. Beau Rabedeaux and Cody Pamperin closed out the game for the Beavers, each pitching an inning.

The Beavers took the lead in the first when Evan Weidner cashed in Luis Jimenez with a sacrifice fly to right field. It was followed up with a towering blast by Ulysses Fluellen to right field, as he hit a solo shot for his third home run of the year.

Brady Nygaard kept the scoring going for Weyburn in the fourth inning with a RBI single. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk.

Patience at the plate was a key theme for the Beavers, as they were walked eight times in the game. Mavericks starting pitcher Connor Deeds ended his night after 5 ⅓ innings, with four wild pitches, and three walks, while being credited with four earned runs. The relievers for Medicine Hat would end up walking another four batters.

The lone runs for the Mavericks came in the sixth inning when they scored twice.

The Beavers and Mavericks will take the diamond again Thursday night at Tom Laing Park. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.

There were five other games in the WMBL Wednesday night. The Swift Current 57’s rallied from a 7-3 deficit to beat the Brooks Bombers 14-7. The Regina Red Sox followed up Tuesday’s 26-7 thrashing of the Fort McMurray Giants with an 8-4 victory over the Giants. The Okotoks Dawgs picked up a 14-5 road win over the Yorkton Cardinals, and the Lethbridge Bulls, riding momentum after Tuesday’s win in Weyburn, shutout the Moose Jaw Miller Express 5-0.
