The Bantam A Knight Dodge Wings opened the Hockey Regina Bantam League semifinals Monday night in Regina, taking on the Cougars. The Cougars would come out on top of the first game in the best-of-three series, picking up a 6-2 win.

The Cougars opened the scoring with a goal with just over six minutes remaining in the first period from Rhett Hornoi. In the second, Regina opened up the offence, with three goals. Devin Schmalz scored just 2:21 into the period, the Hornoi notched his second of the game. The scoring in the period was rounded out with a goal from Parker Dunfield.

In the third period, the Cougars opened up the lead to 5-0, then the Wings struck back.

Darien Herlick scored with 5:39 to go in the third, assisted by Zach Schmidt. Sutter Balog then made it a 5-2 game just 28 seconds later, assisted by Matthew Charlton and Connor McDonald.

The Wings weren’t able to muster any more offence, however, as Hornoi finished off the hat trick to make it a 6-2 final with 2:12 left in the game.

The two teams meet again Wednesday night at Crescent Point Place for the second game of the series. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
