For many organizations in Weyburn, volunteers are crucial to their day-to-day operations. This includes many sports organizations, such as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings.

Nick Nielsen is the office and public relations manager with the hockey team. While he has only been in the position for a few weeks, he has already seen how the volunteers play an important role.

“The amount of people who have helped me out just getting myself set and ready to go in this position is ridiculous, and they’re all volunteers who have stepped up their time,” Nielsen pointed out.

While the volunteers with the Red Wings have been one thing for Nielsen, he noted it is a mentality within the community.

“If you go around Weyburn, that's something I’ve noticed in the last little bit here just moving into this community, is the amount of stuff that’s here that’s because of volunteers that we have,” Nielsen said. “You see the fruits of the labour of the volunteers that we have around town.”

So how important are the volunteers for the hockey club who help out not only during the season but in the off-season as well? Would the team be able to function without them?

“Not at all, not even close,” Nielsen proclaimed. “It straight up wouldn’t be possible at all.”

The Red Wings are currently looking for volunteers to help the team out in the coming weeks. The team will be helping with the supper at the Oil & Gas Show on May 31st. Those interested in helping out can contact the team office at (306) 842-2212.
