Last Thursday Souris School was unanimously voted for closure by the South East Cornerstone Board of Education to make way for a new school.

In polling done with the Souris Community Council the results were a little more mixed. In total 58 families were represented in the vote. 48 per cent indicated a preference to stay at Souris, 38 per cent indicated a preference to attend the new school and 14 per cent indicated they had no preference. Of the people who attended an information session showing some of the upgrades and options available in a new school, 65 per cent selected attendance at the new school.

"The board would like to thank the Southeast Cornerstone and the parents who attended the meeting where they had the opportunity to review the plan for the new facility," said Audrey Trombley, South East Cornerstone School Division Board Chairperson. "We'd like also to thank those that chose to participate in the vote to help the board with the difficult decision."

It is anticipated that Souris School will operate for an additional four or five years, until the construction of the new school is completed.

The planning for the new school has begun and the South East Cornerstone Public School Division #209 Board of Education ensured in a letter to the parents/guardians of Souris School students that the Souris School community will be represented on the planning committee.
