Megan Schick was the successful candidate from yesterday's by-election for the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division's Board of Trustees.

She told Discover Weyburn that said she got a call from the Director Education, Keith Keating, last night just half hour after the poll closed.

"He gave me a shout to let me know that I had been successful in winning the election, so that was nice personal touch from him," she said.

Schick won with 61 votes out of 140. Dana Pretzer had 47 votes and Cameron Weber had 32.

"Past elections have only had about 44, so 140 is definitely an improvement, and I did have a lot of backing from my friends and family and neighbors and homeschoolers, so that was good," she noted.

As for what's next, Schick still has some time before the next meeting for her swearing-in and her orientation.

"I'm really excited and I'm really honored to have been chosen by those who went out to vote," Schick commented. "I'm excited to represent the community, and I know it's going to be hard work and commitment, but I am looking forward to getting in there and representing the views of the community and making sure that we're advocating for the right steps for education coming into the next two years."

As a homeschooling mom with an education background, she said she is grateful to be able to homeschool her children, as not everyone, for various reasons, can do so.

"That's part of the reason, but honestly, my main reason for homeschooling is just because I want to spend all the time with my kids," she shared. "These years go so fast, and if I'm only seeing them a couple hours a day, it just doesn't feel like enough for me. So when I want to be a direct part in their their journey and this is a great way to be able to do that with them."

The next board meeting for SECPSD will be held October 13th, 2022.
