The Pesâkâstêw Solar Facility, located in the Rural Municipality of Weyburn, is now in operation.

The 10-megawatt facility will provide clean, renewable power to around 2,500 homes in Saskatchewan.

Pesâkâstêw Solar Limited is a partnership between George Gordon Development, Red Dog Holdings, and Natural Forces. The power generated will be sold to SaskPower as part of a 20-year Power Purchase agreement.

“It's been a long project,” said Don Morgan, Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “It was delayed through the pandemic, but the partners did a remarkable job. We're really happy that it's gone ahead. This now moves us to about a third of our energy coming from renewables.”

He added he expects other provinces will follow suit when it comes to creating renewable energy.

“We have really competent and really good First Nations groups in our province. We have a First Nations Power Authority that works to give leadership and develop capacity. So, I think we've got a good model here. It's continuing to be refined, and I expect it will become something that we'll see more and more across the nation.”

The new facility brings Saskatchewan to a total of 70 megawatts of solar power connected to the grid.

“Our goal is to reduce SaskPower’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030, and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President & CEO.

He added around 3,000 megawatts of renewable power is planned over the next number of years as part of SaskPower’s renewable strategy.

“This project is our First Utility-scale project. Obviously in cooperation with nations in Saskatchewan. So it's a really important start in that process.”
