The next step of one of the biggest road construction projects in Weyburn’s history will begin today. The intersection of Government Road and 1st Avenue will be closed as crews begin repaving and underground infrastructure repairs. It is part of the larger project to reconstruct and repave 1st Avenue from Government Road to 9th Street.

“While the Government Road intersection is being repaved, it's going to be a complete closure of both Highway 13 and Highway 35 coming through that intersection, so all highway traffic is going to be detoured via Highway 39, 16th Street and 5th Avenue North,” explained Renee Cugnet, the City of Weyburn’s Municipal Engineer. “This intersection is expected to be opened back up for highway traffic by the end of next week, but all highway traffic from the east will still be required to detour down 16th Street and Highway 39 for the entire duration of the project. The paving is expected to take about 60 days, weather dependent of course.”

Motorists are reminded to follow all traffic signs and plan any travel accordingly to account for the detours.
