The Saskatchewan Pork Development Board is encouraging hog producers to keep a close watch on grain production estimates as they secure feed supplies for the winter months.

Indications are that supplies of wheat and feed peas will increase, supplies of barley will be constant and prices will decline.

Sask Pork policy analyst Mark Ferguson says there has been a significant decline in feed grain costs over the last month.

Ferguson says it's unfortunate that even with the decline in feed costs, hog farms are continuing to operate with negative margins.

He says what's needed are higher meat and higher hog prices in the long term.
