Assiniboia Park Elementary students involved in the school’s first production since 2019, had their dress rehearsal for High School Musical Jr. on Thursday.

The students involved are in Grades 4, 5, and 6. Being in the musical was an extra-curricular activity for them.

“We've been practicing for about a month and a half and if it's been a lot of fun,” said music teacher Kendra Gonczy. “We have Grades 4, 5, and 6 involved in our musical and we have a total of about 50 kids involved, so that's awesome in our little school.”

Gonczy said the Grade 6 students practice the most as they have bigger roles, and the whole cast practices at least twice a week.

“They've been practicing after school and they put in a lot of time at home practicing their lines and learning their songs,” said Gonczy. “It's just been a blast to be able to get together after the pandemic and also just make music and sing and dance and just have fun together again.”

She added many teachers have helped out with the production.

“I think there's a total of 10 teachers in our small school that have helped out with this and it would not be possible without them as well. I'm the director, but everyone has been there since day one.”

The performances take place on June 1 and 2 at Assiniboia Park Elementary School, and there will be a silver collection at the door.
