Another day means another Communithon Spotlight!
Jackie Wilson with Inclusion Weyburn (formerly the Weyburn Branch of Saskatchewan Association for Community Living) joined us to fill us in on the organization.
"Our goal is to help people who have intellectual disabilities," said Wilson. "We started with a major project this summer. We had a summer day camp for children aged 6 through 12. These children were never able to go to camp before because they needed supports you wouldn't see at a camp so we partnered with the Leisure Centre to set up a camp."
She noted that it was a great summer with the new camp and they have plans to do more.
"We plan to move into helping older kids and we would like to do things for younger children as well," she said. "Summer times can be so difficult for children with intellectual disabilities because routine is just so important."
Along with programs for the children, Inclusion runs a variety of programs for individuals of all ages who have intellectual disabilities.
"There's so many programs available for people," said Wilson, noting that they hold information nights throughout the year.
As many organizations have noted, Wilson said the funds from Communithon are crucial to their agency.
"The funds from Communithon help us with our ongoing program costs," she said. "The summer camp is a big budget for us and any money that we receive is going directly to caring for these people who need our help."
Outside of Communithon, Wilson noted that memberships are open for the organization and there are yellow bins around the community that are open for donations throughout the year.
In closing, she noted the incredibly caring nature of Weyburn.
"I found out, having a little organization here in Weyburn, how extremely caring and supporting our Weyburn people are," she said. "I guess it's the same old story, you don't appreciate until you're the person in need and, since we've started and people are finding out about us, they are interested in us, they care and they have shown their support in so many ways and it makes me so proud to be a citizen of Weyburn and to know that there are so many good, caring people there who really want to help their community and donating to Communithon with United Way is certainly one way people show that."
Communithon runs on October 19th.
