The focus was on Organics Friday in Swift Current.

There are 842 certified organic producers, 28 certified organic livestock producers and 89 certified organic processors in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan grows 61% of the organic field crops in Canada.

Marla Carlson, the Executive Director for Sask Organics gives a breakdown of the Organic products and what Canadian consumers are buying.

"Canada is now the fifth largest organic consumer market in the world," Carlson said. "We were fourth but the growing middle class in China has meant that they have taken fourth in the standings."

She also went onto to state there’s a strong consumer interest in Organics right now.

"89% of what organic consumers in Canada are buying is fruits and vegetables, then it goes down to 24% for organic dairy and dairy products and 23% for organic livestock or meat," Carlson said.   

Provincially, producers grow 500,000 acres of organic field crops, 361,000 acres of pasture and forages, 700 acres of organic fruits and vegetables and 11,700 acres of wild rice.
