Farmers are weighing their options when it comes to seeding canola.

Angela Brackenreed, agronomist for the Canola Council of Canada, says it all depends on a grower's appetite for risk.

She notes there is a good chance of a spring frost in the next couple of weeks, however, canola has its best chance of reaching yield potential when seeded in early May.

Brackenreed has some advice for producers.

"What we can do is start taking soil temperatures," she said. "We want to go at least to the depth of seeding, once in the morning, once in the afternoon and average that over a period of days. What we're looking for ideally is 10 degrees for quickest germination, but 5 [degrees] is alright if that forecast is for warm days."
