The Weyburn Police Service joined up with a number of other law enforcement agencies from across the province last week for a three-day impaired driving enforcement project.

Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype thanked the other agencies who participated in the event, which included the Saskatchewan Association of Conservation Officers, Canadian Pacific Police Service, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and several units from the Combined Traffic Services of Saskatchewan, including the Weyburn RCMP, Regina RCMP, Yorkton RCMP, Carlyle RCMP, Broadview RCMP, the Regina Police Service and the Estevan Police Service.

“We also want to thank all of the hundreds of drivers that went through and were checked and were sober and driving safely,” said VanDeSype. “Kudos to them as well.”

Over the course of the three days, February 24th to 26th, there were four drivers who tested positive for the presence of drugs. They received 72-hour license suspensions and vehicle impoundment, and face pending charges of driving while impaired by a drug. Another driver received a 72-hour suspension after a roadside screening device for alcohol returned a warning result.

Impaired driving was the primary focus of the three-day project, but officers were also on the lookout for other traffic related infractions.

“There were 44 drivers that received a ticket for a driving infraction,” added VanDeSype. “There were also 41 drivers that were given either a written or a verbal warning.”
