The Water Security Agency released the spring runoff report for March Thursday morning, and the anticipated runoff for southeast Saskatchewan isn’t promising.

The report confirmed the lower moisture conditions in the region, with Weyburn, Estevan and even as far west as Assiniboia expected to receive a well-below normal runoff. This has been due to the rather dry conditions over the winter, and the dry conditions in the fall as well.

In the release, the WSA stated surface water supplies at larger reservoirs are expected to be met, however, those who use smaller reservoirs or dugouts could see shortages if the snowpack conditions don’t improve. Low levels could also occur on recreational lakes in southern Saskatchewan.

The Water Security Agency did state the runoff potential, and response can change depending on snowfall over the coming weeks, as well as the weather during the melt. The final runoff report is expected to be issued in early April, unless the runoff is complete, or nearly complete, in most areas before then.
