"It's a sad day," Conservative Member of Parliament Dr. Robert Kitchen told Discover Weyburn last week when asked about his thoughts on the recent carbon pricing plan put forward by the federal government.

"It's not a pricing issue, it's a tax," he added.

Kitchen has been spending his time recently in Ottawa getting the voice of his constituents out.

When he was back in the province around Thanksgiving, Kitchen spoke with people from Moosomin, Weyburn and handful of rural locations.

"One hundred per cent of the people I talked to that came up to me, and said something to me, were supportive of exactly what I've been saying and what's been (said) by Premier Wall and the issues that we're dealing with," Kitchen said.

And what is it that Kitchen has been saying?

One concern is that we are compounded by our location.

"We live in a part of the world where we're continuely needing to keep ourselves warm and that is being paid for by gas and energy," he said.

Secondly, that we are subject to added travel time for certain services, such as healthcare.

Another concern for Kitchen is the detached understanding by some federal officials about what steps Saskatchewan is taking to curb emissions.

Kitchen cites the carbon capture program in Estevan and efforts by the agricultural industry to mitigate emissions as proactives steps within the province.

As for his opinions on the recent White Paper on Climate Change released by the provincial government, Kitchen said this is something he agrees with.

Kitchen believes Premier Wall's "proactive point of view" on how to allocate money and the focus on technology and innovation is the right approach.
