With the close of the nominations for the coming municipal elections, there won’t just be ballots cast in the city of Weyburn. Nominations have been submitted for the surrounding rural municipalities, and the villages and towns in the area as well. Rural municipalities are electing reeves, and councillors in odd-numbered divisions.

When the nominations closed, a number of the R.M.’s found that they had their councils acclaimed, with no other candidates coming forward for the election. There were a few new faces that were nominated, however, as some councillors are stepping down.

In the R.M. of Weyburn, Reeve Carmen Sterling was acclaimed for another term. Joining her on the council will be Darren Cugnet in Division 1, Lloyd Culham in Division 3, and Norm McFadden in Division 5. With all four candidates being acclaimed, this means there will not be an election in the R.M. of Weyburn this year.

There won’t be an election in the rural municipality of Brokenshell, either. Reeve Gary Christopherson was acclaimed to his position, with incumbents Mark Thorne and Leonard Vande Velde returning to their seats.

There will be a vote for the reeve of the rural municipality of Griffin. Stacy Lund will have a challenger in Wayne Knoblauch. Ballots for the reeve will be the only ones cast in that R.M. this year, though. Laurence Kosior, Colin Wilgenbusch and James Piel are all acclaimed back to their seat at council.

The R.M. of Laurier won't be having an election either. Todd Labbie is returning to the council as Reeve, with Brad Vandenhurk, Pat Doud and Bev Pirio also holding onto their seats at council by acclamation.

There will be an election in the rural municipality of Wellington. Kelly Schneider will return as reeve through acclamation, as will David Beach, councillor in Division 1. There will be a vote to determine the councillor for Division 3, though. David Menzies is the incumbent, and will be challenged for the position by Marilyn Kot.

The rural municipality of Lomond won’t see any ballots cast to determine their council in the coming election. Desmond McKenzie was acclaimed as reeve. John Tosczak is the councillor for Division 1, Barry Bankson is the councillor in Division 3, and Division 5 will be represented by Brad Irwin.

There are a few acclamations in the R.M. of Fillmore, and an election. Gerald Nixon has been acclaimed as the reeve in the rural municipality. Les Katona was named councillor for Division 1, and Russell Leguee councillor for Division 3. There will be a vote for the councillor of Division 5. Incumbent Roger Procyk has been challenged by newcomer Darren Urban.

The RM of Scott says it received just enough nominations to fill all the spots on council. The new Reeve is Ryley Richards. He replaces Douglas Watson, who chose not to run again. Watson was Reeve since 1997.Division 1's representative will be Bradley Quigley, Division 3 will be Terrence Moon, and Division 5 will be Tim Deveraux. Each of the councillors is an incumbent.

Discover Weyburn has reached out to the R.M. of Cymri for its lists for the coming municipal elections. We are awaiting the official list at this time.
