Producers are moving along at a steady pace to get the 2016 crop off the field, although they will be delayed this weekend with coming rains.

Saskatchewan Agriculture’s latest crop report shows that 60 per cent of the crop is off the field. The five-year average is 62 per cent.

Here in southeast Saskatchewan, producers are ahead of the curve. So far, 73 per cent has been combined, with another 16 per cent swathed or ready for straight cut. The five-year average for the region is 70 per cent.

The windy and dry weather of the past week helped producers immensely, although the wet conditions that have struck at times throughout harvest are having an impact.

There have been some reports of damage to crops, mainly coming from weathering due to disease, and too much moisture. Quality for some has also been downgraded, primarily by bleaching, sprouting and fusarium.

Overall, producers are reporting above average yields. With the slowdown over the weekend because of wet conditions, producers will be anxiously waiting for the sun to return next week, so they can get back in the field to wrap up the harvest.
