With the long weekend here, along with the unofficial kickoff to summer, SGI is reminding drivers to stay safe on the highways, and roadways, as they enjoy the holiday.

With the reputation of Victoria Day long weekend being a party weekend, one point they are emphasizing is a simple one: don’t drink and drive.

“Whether you’re heading up to the lake, or having a couple of drinks at your local bar, make sure you have a safe and sober ride home,” explained Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations with SGI.

Police across the province will be very visible this weekend, with a number of checkstops set up, looking for impaired drivers.

Another tip from SGI is to slow down, and obey the speed limit. With a record number of speeding tickets issued in March, McMurchy warns speeding can result in fines, demerits, impoundment and even criminal charges, depending on the offence.

Other tips from SGI for the roadways this weekend and every weekend include putting the phone down, embracing the zipper merge, buckling up, and staying alert while driving.
