A member of the Weyburn Police Service sustained minor injuries in an arrest made early this morning, after a fleeing suspect attempted to run the officer down.

At approximately 1:39 a.m., members of the Weyburn Police Service located a suspect vehicle parked at the East Weyburn location of 7-11. The vehicle and driver were wanted in connection with an incident earlier in the evening for Flight From Police. When police attempted to stop the vehicle from leaving the parking lot, the suspect vehicle allegedly rammed a Weyburn Police Service vehicle and then attempted to run over the officer when he exited the cruiser to make an arrest.

A second Weyburn Police Service vehicle on scene was struck head-on in what police say appeared to be an intentional act by the accused driver as they attempted to flee the area on Millar Road. One Weyburn Police Service vehicle sustained minor damage. The suspect vehicle and the other Weyburn Police Service vehicle involved in the collision sustained major damage.

The 21-year-old driver and lone occupant of the suspect vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and is facing several Criminal Code charges, including evading police and colliding with a police cruiser. The accused driver was transported to Weyburn Police Service cells and examined by Weyburn EMS. The officer of the second vehicle was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

The matter is still under investigation at this time.
