Did you know that Weyburn doesn't have too many roads whereon you can actually safely pass by someone who is turning? Did you know sometimes people are stopped for pedestrians, and passing illegally on the right can risk lives?

Constable Lisa Robertson with the Weyburn Police Service says some drivers think it's okay to invent right hand passing lanes where there are none. The issue is especially prevalent in areas like on Government Road where drivers often turn onto Coteau Avenue in either direction, yet neither side has two lanes.

"In the City of Weyburn, there are only a few streets that actually have right hand lanes or passing lanes. Most of them are near intersections, to turn right or go straight," explained Robertson.

"So, when you're driving, especially in residential areas, or downtown, if a vehicle is stopped ahead of you, please slow down, and stop behind them."

When a vehicle is stopped for a pedestrian, one or more of the drivers behind them, out of impatience, often decide to just pass them on the right. However, this kind of action can result in tragedy.

"With more people out and about now, a lot more pedestrians are out walking or even on bikes, so be prepared to stop and slow down," she reminded.

"Don't just assume you can drive around a vehicle that is stopped, as they may be stopped for a pedestrian to cross the road."

Watch the vehicle ahead of you, and don't pass on the right unless the option is clearly marked by visible signage, she added.

Unless there's a white line clearly denoting two lanes, or the sign indicates using a lane for turning, just exercise patience and don't risk it.
