A rarely seen achievement in the SJHL Wednesday night. Melfort Mustang forward Justin Ball became the first person since the 2010-11 season to score 50 goals in a campaign, and the 15th person in the last 30 seasons to accomplish the feat.

The goal came in a 6-4 win over the Melville Millionaires, a game many from Weyburn were watching due to the playoff implications. The Millionaires are currently two points up on the Red Wings for the tenth and final playoff spot as the teams head into their last six games of the season.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first thanks to a marker from George King.

In the second, the Millionaires rallied back to take the lead with goals from Luke Nkwana and Aidan Steinke.

Just 40 seconds after Melville gained the lead, they lost it, as Carson Albrecht scored his 31st of the season, then Ball notched his 50th of the year to push the Mustangs back into the lead. Albrecht then scored his second of the night to make it a 4-2 Melfort lead.

In the third period, Kayle Tosh opened the lead for the Mustangs with his ninth of the year, before Sam De Melo replied for Melville. Luke Spadafora then pulled the Millionaires within one with his fifth.

Colin Schmidt would score an empty netter for the Mustangs to seal the deal, giving them the 6-4 win.

The Millionaires continue to sit two points up on Weyburn for the final playoff spot in the SJHL. Both teams have played 52 games on the season, and will play other twice over the next week; games which will more than likely determine which team is advancing, and who will be heading home at the end of the regular season.

Another coaching change in the SJHL.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves announced Wednesday night they would not be renewing the contract of Evan Vossen, and he would not be behind the bench for the remainder of the season. The decision was made after the Ice Wolves dropped a 9-3 road decision to the Yorkton Terriers.

Vossen took over as the head coach and general manager of the Ice Wolves during the 2016-17 season. Over his time behind the bench, he has posted a record of 22-118-2-5.

Gaelen Patterson will be taking the reins as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

The loss Wednesday night was the 14th in a row for the Ice Wolves, who will be finishing in 12th place in the SJHL for the third straight season.

Yorkton was led by Chantz Petruic and Mason Mullaney, as the duo each recorded a hat trick in the win. The other goals for Yorkton came courtesy Quinten Hobbs, who had two goals, and Brendan Mark.

With the win, the Terriers move to six points back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division, with two games in hand. For the Terriers, though, they need some help to close the gap, as the Bruins have a magic number of just 5 to cinch up top spot in the division.
