The Weyburn Red Wings suffered their second loss in a row Friday night, when they fell 3-2 to the Melfort Mustangs in a shootout. Despite the loss, though, the single point put the Red Wings into first place in the Viterra Division.

The Mustangs were first to get on the board, when Jaxon Joseph picked up his third goal of the season just 3:44 into the opening period. The power play goal came during a scramble in front of Red Wings netminder Nathan Hargrave, who was making his fourth start of the season. Weyburn pushed in the period, but wasn’t able to get the equalizer before the end of the opening frame.

The Red Wings did make it onto the board in the second period. Carson Rose netted his third goal of the season, on the power play, just over four minutes into the period. The goal was the third game tying goal for Rose this season. It wouldn’t take long for the Wings to get the lead, either. Just 19 seconds later, a shot from Rose went off the glass, onto the stick of Cole Woodliffe, who scored his second of the season, putting it past Melfort goal Hunter Arps, making his SJHL debut between the pipes.

The Red Wings pushed to try to get an insurance marker throughout the rest of the second, and beginning of the third. The team hit a combined six posts, and chances when they would be able to get a shot on an open net were met with a smart defensive play from the Mustangs.

Melfort tied things up in the third, when Nick Schultz scored his second goal of the season. The puck ended up on his stick in front of Hargrave, and it appeared he didn’t even realize he had it, before it ended up just over the line. With just under 13 minutes left on the clock, both teams pushed to get the go-ahead goal, but were unable to, leading to overtime.

In overtime, what would normally be a three-on-three situation would be four-on-three, as both teams took a number of penalties, including a late cross-checking call against Braden Mellon for the Wings. As a result of the penalty, he would be unable to participate in the shootout which followed.

Carson Rose was the first shooter for Weyburn, followed by Tyran Brown and Donovan Lumb. None of the shooters from Weyburn were able to solve Arps in the shootout. Dakota Boutin and Kalem Zary were the first two shooters for the Mustangs, but were unable to score on Hargrave. The third shooter, Rylan Freed, was able to get past Hargrave, giving the Mustangs the win.

The game was a chippy affair as well. It culminated late in the second period when Jacob Wozney and Miles Warkentine were assessed 10-minute misconducts, while Mike Eskra and Freed received minors for roughing during a scrum beside the Weyburn net, after the Mustangs finished hard in the crease of Hargrave. It sets a tone for the next time the teams meet, in late October, in Melfort.

For the Red Wings, their next game will be Monday, when they take on the Flin Flon Bombers at the SJHL Showcase in Warman. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since Flin Flon eliminated Weyburn from the playoffs last season. Weyburn wraps up the Showcase Tuesday against the Kindersley Klippers. The next home game for the Red Wings will be September 30th, when the Estevan Bruins pay a visit to Crescent Point Place in what could be a match-up for first in the division.
