Ian Parker, a three-year veteran of the Weyburn Red Wings, picked up his first career hat trick in the SJHL, as the Weyburn Red Wings topped the La Ronge Ice Wolves 4-3 in overtime Friday night. The win is the second this season for Weyburn in La Ronge, and the second time the two teams have gone to extra time. Parker helped the team rally back from a two-goal deficit, before netting the overtime winner.
Special teams were also a key factor in the win, as the Wings netted three power play goals on five opportunities. Two of the power play goals were collected by Parker, while the third was courtesy Ty Brown.
In the Weyburn end, Jake MacLennan, making his second start in La Ronge, came away with his second win, as he turned away 32 of the 35 shots he faced. For the Ice Wolves, their starting goalie, Luke Lush, kept the team in close the entire night, especially late in the third period.

Parker scored the opening goal of the game seven minutes into the first period, when he took a feed from Jacob Wozney and buried it past Lush. Braden Mellon got the secondary assist on the goal. La Ronge wasn’t able to muster much in the way of offense in the opening period, with their chances extremely limited.

The Ice Wolves did get on the board in the second, when Shea Kiryk, recently acquired from the Kindersley Klippers, slipped the puck past MacLennan during a goalmouth scramble. It was the first goal of the season for Kiryk.

In the third period, La Ronge continued to come out strong, buoyed by their game tying goal in the second. Derek Patter beat MacLennan during another scramble in the crease to make it 2-1. The goal came while the Wings were killing off a 5-on-3 situation. Then, 20 seconds later, David Frater scored, making it 3-1.

For the Wings, it was the third time they found themselves down by two goals in the third period on this road trip. They didn’t let it deter them, however, as they pushed for a goal. It came with less than eight minutes on the clock, when Ty Brown put his seventh of the year past Lush, with Parker and Donavon Lumb getting the assists.

There was 1:57 left on the clock when Kiryk made a play that would change the course of the game. Coming across the blue line, with a teammate offside, Kiryk fired the puck on net half a second after the whistle had blown. Referee Jason Bourdon, who had previously warned both benches he wouldn’t tolerate any shenanigans with the goaltenders, called Kiryk for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving the Wings the power play.

When the clock reached 1:30, MacLennan headed to the bench as the Wings moved in to the offensive zone. Enjoying a 6-on-4 advantage, Parker put the puck in past Lush from the left-hand faceoff circle for the second time on the night, making it a tie game.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, the Wings didn’t waste much time. Ian Parker came in with Braden Mellon just 59 seconds into the extra period, and scored the hat trick goal, giving the Wings their first win on their road trip through the Sherwood Division.

The Wings will have a chance to finish the trip at .500 as they head to Melfort for Saturday night’s game. The game can be heard live on Red Wing Radio K106, starting with the pre-game show at 7:20 p.m.
