A bronze medal for one Weyburn-born hockey player.

Dylan Ernst was a goaltender with Team Canada at the Youth Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland. The tournament featured some of the best players aged 15 and younger in the world.

After a rocky round-robin, and a semi-final defeat at the hands of the United States, Team Canada found themselves up against Team Finland in the bronze medal game Wednesday morning. The Canadians would take an early 3-1 lead, and hold on for a 4-2 win to win the bronze medal.

Canada had goals from Antonin Verreault, Nate Danielson and Cédrick Guindon in the first period, while the Finns were able to reply late in the period with a goal from Elmeri Laakso.

Neither team was able to score in the second period, setting up an entertaining and competitive third period to determine who would be going home with the bronze medal, and who would be going home empty-handed.

The Finns pulled within one goal in the third when Laakso scored on the power play late in the frame, making it 3-2. Canada would hold on, though, as Guindon scored an empty-net goal in the dying seconds to secure the win.

Ernst, who saw limited action in the tournament, was the backup for the game. He will now come home from his international experience and re-join the Moose Jaw Warriors of the SMAAAHL.
